Hobbies

Many years of teaching a wide variety of courses have given me a plethora of pedagogical techniques. I have gained insight into course and exam design, lecture preparation, and classroom management. As a result of my experiences, I am a strong believer in using a variety of teaching techniques in order to reach the greatest number of students, as not everyone learns in the same way. I make extensive use of multimedia (film and video, web sources) and in-class discussions. In addition, I believe that academic success has to translate into success outside of higher education for it to truly be effective. Therefore, I focus on helping students to develop critical thinking as a central part of my teaching strategy. My own personal history has prepared me to teach students from different backgrounds, and taught me the value of diverse perspectives. I began my life in the Soviet Union, and spent two years in Angola as a child. After immigrating to the United States in my early teens, I then experienced a typical American high school and college life. I have considerable adult experience abroad, including an academic semester in the former East Germany, and travel to Eastern and Western Europe as well as South and Central America. This broad international experience helped transform me into a person with an open mind enabling me to understand and relate to people who come from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
